Life's a Beach

In Mexico we only visited one beach, and it was full of vicious sand fleas. Our group was pretty excited a couple of days go when we arrived to Santa Marta, a beach town on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia. We had a lecture-free, museum-free morning yesterday to swim and relax.

In the afternoon, we went to Taganga Beach, a horsehoe-shaped beach full of local fishermen and foreign tourists. I had a delicious plate of arroz con camarones and got a 40-minute beach massage ($10) before taking a quick dip in the sea.

Last night we traveled by bus to the historical city of Cartagena. We rolled into the city Chiva Bus style, dancing in the aisle. Our guide, who has led Fulbright groups in Mexico for 11 years, says we are the first group to dance in the aisle of the bus. We are unique, he says, in our propensity for parties.

Our hotel is very nice with a spectacular view. We have roommates at this hotel, but the rooms are suites with separate rooms. So that was a nice surprise. Today we have a lecture in the morning and a tour of the historical city center in the afternoon. Hopefully, we can make it to the beach as well.
